healthy livingAccording to Sergio Tufik, coordinator of the Sleep Institute at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), sleep is important for homeostasis which is the stabilization and self regulation of the human body. Sleep deprivation hence affects body functions and even brain function.

The Sleep Institute has been conducting research to find out the relationship between breathing disturbances during sleep and cardiac problems and circulatory problems as well as the relationship between poor sleep and hormonal dysfunction. These studies have been valuable and have provided insight into sleep patterns at a time when people are sleeping a fewer number of hours.
