The Five Health Numbers Every Person Should Know

cholesterolThe majority of us want to live a long life. However, how can we live long if we succumb to disease and debilitation? With regards to our health, there are numbers which you have to know by heart. These numbers determine how healthy you are. An article from http://medcitynews.com has featured five important numbers that can reveal the statuses of our health.

  • Blood pressure. The ideal blood pressure should be less than 120/80. The higher the pressure, the more risk there is for damage to the blood vessels and damage to the organs that these vessels feed. Over time, untreated high blood pressure greatly increases the chances of having a stroke, heart disease or kidney failure.

  • Total cholesterol. The ideal cholesterol level is below 200 mg/dL. This number is a combination of high-density lipoproteins (HDL), low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and other fats in your blood.

  • Fasting blood sugar. The ideal level is less than 100 mg/dL. This tells you the sugar content of your blood and tells you whether you have diabetes or not.

  • BMI. The ideal level is less than 25. BMI stands for body mass index. It's a formula that takes your mass (in kilograms), divided by height (in metres squared). It helps determine if you're at a normal weight, underweight, overweight or obese. Being obese makes you at high risk for many diseases.

  • Waist size. The ideal waist size is less than 35 inches (women); less than 40 inches (men). This is important because people with large waistlines have too much abdominal fat, putting them at a high risk for Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and coronary vascular disease.
