Facial Structure of Asians Putting Them at Risk of Sleep Apnoea
Sleep experts have discovered that Asians are most likely to suffer from obstructive sleep apnoea when compared to Caucasians due to notable differences in facial structures. Dr. Vikas Agrawal explains that Indians have flat faces and the chin is not protruded which results in the tongue pressing the back of the throat.
Dr. Agrawal, a snoring and sleep apnoea surgeon displayed the TransOral Robotic Surgery (TORS) in treatment of sleep apnoea. The latest robotic technique has been shown to be effective as opposed to CPAP which not as effective among Asians. TORS is effective since it is a one-time treatment for OSA and uses extreme precision of robotic arms to resect the obstruction at the base tongue which is difficult to reach and operate.
