FAA Makes Medical Certification Rule Mandating Sleep Apnoea Testing
Since last year the Federal Aviation Administration has mandated that all pilots who apply for medical certificates should have their body mass index (BMI) calculated. Those with a BMI of more than 40 will have to go through a mandatory sleep study. The objective of the medical checks is to ensure pilots do not suffer from obstructive sleep apnoea. The sleep study is to be undertaken by a board certified sleep specialist.
The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and other aviation organizations have strongly objected to this arbitrary move by the FAA medical office. Their arguments against the FAA are based on the fact that no aircraft accident has been attributed to obstructive sleep apnoea.
