Electric Jolt May Ease Sleep Apnoea

A recent clinical trial found that upper airway stimulation with an implanted neurostimulator is a safe and effective treatment for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnoea. The researchers studied the efficacy and safety of electrical stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve in treated obstructive sleep apnoea in 124 CPAP-intolerant or -naive patients. After 12 months there was improvement in apnoea, hypopnea, oxygen saturation, sleepiness and quality of life.
