Dr. Murray Feingold: Should my Child Have an Adenotonsillectomy?

childAn estimated one out of every eight American children undergoes adenotonsillectomy which is the removal of the tonsils and adenoids. The surgical procedure is commonly referred to as T&A and a major indication for this surgery is obstructive sleep apnoea. Other indications for the procedure are abnormal dentofacial growth, recurrent tonsil infection and ear infection, and impaired speech.

Studies indicate that adenotonsillectomy in children greatly reduces the symptoms of sleep apnoea. Comparative to a group of children who did not have the surgery, there was no improved intellectual function as commonly believed.
