Diagnosis and Treatment of Sleep Disordered Breathing in Hospitalized Cardiac Patients: A Reduction in 30-Day Readmission rates

sickSleep disordered breathing is a major cause of cardiovascular sequelae such as atrial fibrillation. The study was conducted with patients hospitalized with cardiac conditions and who were put on positive airway pressure (PAP) to treat sleep disordered breathing. Sleep disordered breathing is aproblem that goes undiagnosed in hospitalized cardiac patients.

For the study, 106 patients with cardiac problems such as heart failure, arrhythmias and myocardial infarction were recruited. A sleep study was undertaken and the patients with sleep disordered breathing were put on PAP therapy. It was discovered that patients with cardiac disease and SDB who adhered to PAP treatment had lower hospital readmission and ED visits.
