Dangers of Sleep Apnoea on Your Heart
A recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology has shed light on the very high risk of sudden cardiac death associated with obstructive sleep apnoea. Their findings were that a drop of blood oxygen to 78% increases the risk of sudden cardiac death by up to 80%.
The study was undertaken with approximately 11,000 patients over a five year period. Dr. Apoor S. Gami, a cardiologist and lead author, reports that 142 patients suffered sudden cardiac death. He outlined the independent risk factors for sudden cardiac death as 20 or more apnoea episodes in an hour, being 60 years old and over, and lastly blood oxygen saturation falling below 78%.
