Changes in Extracranial Arteries in Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

human heartFor a long time now, obstructive sleep apnoea has been linked to an increase in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Even though extensive studies have not been undertaken, it is thought that the increase in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality is through enhancement of atherosclerotic vascular changes.

For this specific study, 35 OSA patients and 35 non-OSA patients as the control group were subjected to an ultrasonograph of the large extracranial vessels. Carotid artery-intima media thickness (CCA-IMT) and presence of plaques and stenoses was checked as well. CCA-IMT is increased in patients with untreated OSA and is related to the degree of nocturnal oxygen desaturation. Additionally patients with OSA had more severe plaque formation.
