Cardiovascular Benefits of Oral Appliance Therapy in Obstructive Sleep Apnoea: A Systematic Review

The study was aimed at performing a systematic review of the current available evidence regarding the cardiovascular benefits of oral appliance therapy in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) patients. The study was based on the systematic review of relevant articles that were retrieved from online databases such as Web of Science, PubMed, OvidSP, and Medline. Also included in the review were all studies undertaken and published on the effects of oral appliance therapy on cardiovascular parameters prior to 20th January 2013.

Oral aplliance therapy has been shown to have beneficial effects on blood pressure, endothelial function, and left ventricular function of the heart. Oral appliance therapy showed improvement on the cardiovascular comorbidities in OSA patients. Studies that compared oral appliance therapy to CPAP therapy showed the effects of oral appliance therapy were similar to the effects of CPAP therapy.
