Cardio-Respiratory Coordination Increases during Sleep Apnoea

heartFrequent apnoea and hypopnoea events during the night for sleep apnoea patients increase the risk of metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases. A study was undertaken with 27 males who suffered from obstructive sleep apnoea. To detect cardiorespiratory coordination, a coordigram was used to detect and measure the temporal distance between a respiratory onset and the cardiac onsets in the preceding and following respiratory cycle.

It was found that cardiorespiratory coordination occurs both in resting conditions and under situations of high autonomic stress at the end of apnoeic and hypopnoeic events. The coordigram was a novel tool that carried advantages in the assessment of cardiorespiratory coordination.
