Caffeine Therapy for Apnoea of Prematurity Does Not Have Long-Term Harmful Effects on Sleep

caffeineThe first study of its kind sought to examine the long-term effects of neonatal caffeine treatment on sleep regulation and ventilatory control on a group of 201 preterm children assessed between the ages of 5 and 12.

The findings of the study were that no significant differences were noted between children who received caffeine or placebo as infants in actigraphic total sleep time or in the apnoea hypopnoea index, which indicates sleep apnoea severity based on the number of apnoeas and hypopnoeas per hour of sleep.

Dr. Marcus, a lead researcher says that the study proved that administration of therapeutic caffeine to premature infants had no long-term negative effects on sleep or sleep disorders
