Bruxism & Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

sleep apnoeaObstructive sleep apnoea is a condition that has been pointed out as life threatening or life altering. OSA has been associated with strokes and heart attacks. Sleep bruxism, classified as a sleep related movement disorder, has been shown to be a mechanism to prevent airway collapse. It is often a difficult task to identify bruxism patients who suffer from OSA.

Bruxism has been shown to be a subconscious intervention by the brain to keep the airways open when the airways collapse and allow breathing. Bruxism can lead to number of dental problems. Bruxism can be managed through the use of a mouth guard whereas OSA is treated through oral appliance therapy.
