Breathing Appliances Can Reduce Mortality for Sleep Apnoea Patients

Sleep apnoea is a common medical condition which can have serious medical consequences when untreated. Apnoea occurs when the muscles and soft tissues in the throat relax and collapse to cause a total blockage of the airway for up to 10 seconds or more. A recent study has shown that breathing appliances can reduce mortality in sleep apnoea patients. This study suggests for the first time that oral appliances may confer reduction in cardiovascular mortality for patients with severe obstructive sleep apnoea intolerant to continuous positive airway pressure.
