Bolton West MP Julie Hilling Wins Award for Raising Awareness of Sleep Apnoea
Julie Hilling, the MP for Bolton West, has won the national road safety award for her ongoing campaign to improve awareness and diagnosis of sleep apnoea. Sleep apnoea disrupts sleep through obstruction of the airways and is estimated to affect 1.5 million people in the U.K.
Sleep apnoea is associated with risks such as road accidents. Ms Hilling is lauded for her efforts especially in getting a debate on sleep apnoea in Parliament. The debate has led to health minister, Norman Lamb MP, taking up the issue with relevant organizations to evaluate what the government can do to improve the diagnosis and management of sleep apnoea.
