Body Weight, Sleep-Disordered Breathing and Cognition Linked in Children

baby sleepingThe relationship between obesity, sleep disordered breathing and cognitive processing among elementary school children has been investigated through research at the University of Chicago. The research was informed by the fact that the brain of children develop very rapidly.

Sleep disordered breathing was shown to increase the risk of adverse cognitive and weight outcomes. On the other hand, impaired cognitive functioning is associated with the risk of adverse weight outcomes and sleep disordered breathings. The conclusion of the study was that children should be treated for sleep disorders promptly. There should be campaigns to target overweight children and those having learning problems to test them for sleep disordered breathing.
