Better Guidance Urgently Needed for ‘epidemic’ of Sleep Apnoea in Surgical Patients
There have been calls for research to be done to single out the most effective and the safest ways to carry out surgery on sleep apnoea patients. Very few hospitals have a policy which could act as a guide to minimize risk associated with sleep apnoea. The situation calls for serious consideration since a quarter of the patients undergoing surgery suffer from sleep apnoea.
According to Dr. Stavros Memtsoudis, patients with sleep apnoea have a high risk of developming complications which may include blockage of airways and intubation problems. The effects of sleep apnoea on other organs in the body are also not well known. Research and existing guidelines will see to it that sleep apnoea patients get pre-operative evaluation.
