Smartphones have been a signifcant factor contributing to poor sleep habits. Sleep experts say that electronic gadgets and technology stimulate the brain hence making it difficult to fall asleep. Studies have also shown that blue light emitted from the devices disrupts the circadian rhythms affecting the production of melatonin, the sleep inducing hormone.

Smartphones are encouraging people to carry out tasks in the nighttime when they should be sleeping. Smartphones have contributed to the rise of nocturnal spending especially in the hours between midnight and 06:00. The effect is that people sleep less and the body does not have enough time to rest and recover. The lack of sleep brings about adverse health outcomes.
