The Anatomy of Sleep Apnoea

sleepingIt is important that people who suffer from sleep apnoea to learn the anatomy and the factors that contribute to the disorder. Learning about the factors that are within and beyond the control of the individual will be important in the management of sleep apnoea.

Sleep apnoea is caused by the collapse of the tissues of the upper airways. The soft tissues of the adenoids, tongue, tonsils, and palate will relax and fall back into the airway temporarily closing the upper airways. Obesity will lead to worsening of the condition due to continued deposition of fat around the airway. Anatomical causes of sleep apnoea are corrected through surgery.
