Alcohol and Drug Problems a Greater Risk for Adolescents Who Have Insufficient and Poor Sleep
Research has shown that poor sleep is a predictor of alcohol related problems and the use of illicit drugs among adolescents and young adults. The study has outlined how sleep difficulties and sleep duration will predict specific problems such as drunken driving, binge drinking, and risky sexual behavior.
According to Maria M. Wong, professor of psychology and experimental training at Idaho State University, reports that 27 percent of school going children and 45 percent of adolescents do not get adequate sleep. Insomnia and sleep difficulties predicted onset of alcohol use a year later and nicotine dependence three and half years later. Parents should impress on the importance of sleep to their children, and help the children get good sleep habits.
