9 Ways to Sleep Better During Allergy Season

Woman SleepingAllergies are associated with warmer weather when the flowers begin to bloom and soon endless amounts of pollen which induces allergies will be produced. As we being to approach spring and the onset of warm weather, health problems associated with allergies will be on the rise.

People who suffer from the seasonal allergies are well aware that the symptoms of allergy such as the itching, stuffiness, the sneezing and general discomfort do not stop at bedtime. Allergies will affect sleep by making it more difficult to fall and stay asleep. More than thirty percent of allergy sufferers say that the allergy symptoms affect their sleep.

However, there are a number of things which can help individuals to make the bedroom become allergen free and make it suitable for restful sleep.

1.      Keep the air in the bedroom clean

The indoors provide such a good way of escaping the pollen. At times, the air in house may be laden with allergens such as household dust, dander, pet hair and those that enter from the outside.

A high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter should be used to keep the air in the bedroom clean. Remember to keep the bedroom windows shut to prevent allergens from getting in. The seals on the doors and the windows should be regularly inspected to make sure allergens are kept out of the house.

2.      Keep all beddings very clean

Bed sheets should be washed at least once a week to ensure that an individual sleeps well. It helps keep your sheets free from the dust, pollen, dead skin, and all allergens that make you sneeze or itch.

The same kind of cleaning should be done for fabric curtains. On the other hand, upholstered furniture and the carpet should be vacuumed once weekly or more.

3.      Turn on the dehumidifier

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends that the ideal indoor humidity is anything between 30 percent and 50 percent. Keeping the dehumidifier in the bedroom will help suck out moisture making it harder for allergens and mold to grow. Warm and moist air is the perfect breeding ground for allergy-triggering mold, bacteria, mildew, and dust mites.

4.      Remember to shower in the evening before bedtime

By the end of any given day, you will be covered in an invisible layer of pollen and dust right from the hair, to the skin and clothes from time spent outside. Shower at night and slip into fresh clothing to keep the allergens from the bedroom.

5.      Keep pets out of the bedroom

A single visit of your pet into the bedroom will put all the hard work of preventing your allergies from flaring up to naught. Your cat or dog is basically a walking allergen fur ball since the fur coat carries dirt, dust and dropping hair
