Chin straps are designed to hold the lower jaw in an upward and forward position. The chin strap itself tends to go over the top of the head and sometimes across the back as well. It is typically made from a textile material that may or may not be elasticated. Chin straps are marketed as a treatment for snoring.
Research into the effectiveness of chin straps in treating snoring is very limited. Whilst a chin strap may be effective for some people in holding the lower jaw in position, for some people the jaw will not be held in the required position to maintain an open airway.
The chin strap also requirees the user to breath exclusively through the nose. Some users find this uncomfortable. Furthermore the idea of wearing a chin strap is off putting enough to make them avoid this treatment altogether.
